As global oil prices continue their upward trajectory, Spain is witnessing a persistent rise in petrol costs, now marking the 11th consecutive week of increases. At over 150 service stations in Aragón, prices have already surpassed the €2 per litre threshold, a situation that reflects broader market pressures exacerbated by disruptions in the Middle East that have strained crude oil supplies.
On a national level, the average price for regular petrol in Spain climbed to €1.866 per litre as of September 17, representing a 2.88% increase from the previous week. Diesel prices, too, have been affected, rising to €1.834 per litre after experiencing a temporary decline. These changes highlight Spain’s vulnerability to fluctuations in international oil markets, given its reliance on imported crude.
Adding to the challenge for Spanish motorists is the impending expiration of the government’s temporary fuel discount on September 30. This measure has been crucial in providing financial relief, offering reductions of 5 cents per litre on petrol and 20 cents on diesel. Once this discount ends, industry estimates warn that diesel prices could exceed €2 per litre, while petrol prices are expected to approach that level.
With fuel costs continuing to escalate, Spanish consumers are increasingly urged to compare prices among service stations to mitigate the financial impact. This variability in pricing underscores the importance of strategic purchasing decisions as households grapple with rising fuel expenses.
