In a bid to bolster Vietnam’s economic trajectory, Deputy Prime Minister Nguyễn Văn Thắng has sought enhanced collaboration from the World Trade Organization (WTO) and the World Economic Forum (WEF). During his recent engagements in Switzerland, Thắng emphasized the necessity for these global entities to provide more robust support to elevate Vietnam’s trade and investment landscape, thereby fostering its long-term economic progress.
Thắng reiterated Vietnam’s unwavering dedication to a global trading system governed by rules, urging the WTO to prioritize reforms. He called for the revitalization of the dispute settlement mechanism and advocated for the organization to expand its focus to include emerging sectors such as digital trade and artificial intelligence. Addressing climate change and strengthening supply chain resilience were also highlighted as crucial areas for the WTO’s attention.
Looking ahead, Vietnam envisions transforming into a high-income economy by the year 2045. To achieve this ambitious milestone, Thắng invited the WEF to intensify its cooperative efforts with Vietnam. He suggested that the Forum could play a pivotal role in promoting investment and innovation, fostering public-private partnerships, and aiding in the establishment of international financial centers within the country.
Officials from both the WTO and the WEF expressed their appreciation for Vietnam’s ongoing economic reforms. They assured continued partnership with Vietnam by supporting initiatives related to trade, investment, and capacity building. This mutual cooperation is expected to underpin Vietnam’s aspirations for economic development and integration into the global economy.
