Istanbul Airport has surpassed Heathrow as the busiest airport in Europe for the month of July, with the Turkish hub welcoming 8.15 million passengers compared to Heathrow’s 7.86 million. This shift comes as Heathrow experiences a 1.5% decline in passenger numbers from July of the previous year, while Istanbul Airport has seen a 2.3% increase in traffic. The decline at the UK airport has been partly attributed to disruptions stemming from conflicts in the Middle East.
The renewed competition between these major airports has intensified discussions surrounding Heathrow’s proposed expansion, which includes a controversial third runway. Currently, Heathrow operates with just two runways that are nearing full capacity. The expansion, projected to cost £33 billion, aims to boost annual passenger capacity to approximately 150 million, a move believed to enhance the UK’s international connections, trade, and tourism prospects.
Istanbul Airport, which opened in 2018, benefits from a more extensive site and 24-hour operations. It currently operates three runways and has plans to add a fourth by the end of 2026. This additional capacity is a significant factor in its ability to handle more passengers, highlighting the strategic advantages of its modern infrastructure.
Meanwhile, other UK airports have reported record-breaking figures for July. London Stansted and Manchester airports have each experienced their busiest month ever, handling 3.1 million and 3.4 million passengers, respectively. These figures reflect a broader trend of increasing air travel, even as Heathrow faces its unique challenges.
