As of 2025, Luxembourg finds itself among the least advanced European Union member states in terms of renewable electricity consumption, according to the most recent data from Eurostat. Despite a broad trend of increasing renewable energy use across Europe, Luxembourg registered only 20.2% of its gross final energy consumption from renewable sources. This statistic places the nation near the bottom of the EU rankings, with only Czechia and Malta performing worse when it comes to electricity generated from renewables. Specifically, just 23.3% of Luxembourg’s electricity consumption was sourced from renewables.

In comparison, the broader European Union saw renewable energy accounting for 26.2% of its gross final energy consumption in 2025. This represents a significant rise since 2004, when renewables made up just 9.6% of the energy mix. The EU has set an ambitious target to further increase this share to 42.5% by 2030, reflecting a strong push towards sustainable energy solutions across the continent.

Leading the charge within the EU, Sweden stood out with a remarkable 65.4% of its overall energy consumption derived from renewable sources, setting a high benchmark for other countries in the bloc. Following closely in Sweden’s footsteps were Finland and Denmark, both of which have also made substantial progress in integrating renewable energy into their national grids.

Austria emerged as the frontrunner specifically in the area of renewable electricity consumption. More than 90% of Austria’s electricity was generated from renewable sources, underscoring the country’s commitment to sustainable energy practices and its leadership role in the EU’s green energy transition.
